The Idiolect method

Why Idiolect asks you to use the word

Idiolect is built around a simple problem. People encounter plenty of words. Far fewer become available at the exact moment a thought needs them.

01

Choose a word with somewhere to go

The app begins with a short onboarding conversation about where words matter to you, how you want to sound, and what you want to avoid. It reflects that direction back for you to edit, then uses a brief familiarity check to avoid words already in your active vocabulary.

Idiolect selects one word that suits that direction and explains why it chose it. Research on self-referential memory supports connecting material to the self, although it has not tested Idiolect's selection system.

02

Use it, then check the use

During the day, you try to use the word in a real sentence. This creates a retrieval and generation attempt. At the reflection time you chose, a notification asks you to return and say the sentence aloud.

The AI checks meaning, phrasing, naturalness, and tone instead of awarding a point for typing the right spelling. It can recognise another valid sense or ask for context when the use is ambiguous.

Generation and retrieval have strong support in memory research. Vocabulary studies also show the value of feedback. We describe that evidence as a reason for the design, not proof that the product will work equally well for every person.

03

Bring it back when it is no longer fresh

A word returns after time has passed. You try to recall it before seeing the answer. Repeated retrieval can improve later vocabulary performance, but more attempts are not automatically more efficient. Timing and effort both matter.

04

Measure availability, not activity

The goal is modest and useful. A word should move from something you recognise to something you can choose naturally. That is why Idiolect tracks introduced, practised, used, and yours instead of points or a public league.

The product succeeds when you reach for the word without thinking about the app.

What the evidence can tell us

The cited studies support learning through retrieval, generation, feedback, or a return after time has passed. They do not test Idiolect itself, and they do not prove that one successful use permanently teaches a word.

Try the whole loop

Learn one word you have a reason to use.

Idiolect selects a word from your onboarding conversation. Use it that day, then report the sentence by voice for AI feedback.
