Terms of use

These terms set the ground rules for using Idiolect. They are written for people, but they still form an agreement, so please read them before creating an account or using the app.

Agreement and eligibility

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) apply when you access the Idiolect mobile app, website, and related services (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

You must be at least 13 years old and old enough to agree to these Terms under the law where you live. If you are not old enough to form a binding agreement, a parent or legal guardian must agree for you. Idiolect is not directed to children under 13.

What Idiolect provides

Idiolect is a personal vocabulary practice. It uses an onboarding conversation and familiarity answers to choose a word, asks you to use it during your day, and can assess the sentence you later submit. The Service can also provide reminders, pronunciation, progress history, and later recall practice.

Idiolect may change as it is developed. We may add, remove, or adjust features, word content, models, limits, or availability. We will try to avoid changes that needlessly damage a paid user's access, but no particular feature or word is promised forever.

Accounts

Keep your sign-in method and device secure. You are responsible for activity under your account and for giving accurate information when it matters to account support. Tell us promptly if you believe someone else has gained access.

Do not share one-time sign-in codes, impersonate another person, create accounts to evade a restriction, or transfer an account without our written permission. We may ask you to verify control of the account before disclosing, changing, or deleting account data.

Your content and AI

You keep ownership of the onboarding answers, notes, sentences, context, and other original material you submit (“Your Content”). You give Idiolect a limited, worldwide licence to host, copy, transmit, transform, and process Your Content only as needed to operate, secure, support, and improve the Service. This licence ends when the relevant content is deleted, except for protected backups, de-identified information, and records we must retain by law.

Do not submit material you do not have the right to use. Avoid names, secrets, confidential work information, health details, or other sensitive facts when a less specific sentence would do. The voice transcript and AI response may not match what you intended, so review them before relying on them.

AI feedback and voice transcription can be wrong. A correct-looking response can miss context, tone, irony, a specialised sense, or a transcription error. Idiolect may recognise a valid use, suggest a revision, ask for context, or fail to reach a confident conclusion. You remain responsible for the words you choose and how you use them.

Learning limits

Idiolect is an educational tool, not a school, examination body, dictionary authority, speech therapist, or provider of medical, psychological, legal, or professional advice. It does not guarantee that you will remember a word, communicate successfully, or achieve a particular personal, academic, or professional result.

Definitions, examples, pronunciation, and AI feedback are provided to support practice. Language depends on audience and context. Check an authoritative dictionary or a qualified person when precision has serious consequences.

App Store billing

Idiolect membership is $9.99 per month or $34.99 per year, each starting with a 7-day free trial. The trial is available once per person; if you have already used it on one plan, switching to the other does not grant another. Prices are shown in your local currency before you confirm, and the price, billing period, and trial are always displayed before purchase.

A trial converts to a paid subscription when it ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it does. New members can complete one full daily cycle — a word, its use, and the feedback on it — before membership is presented at all.

Purchases made in the iPhone app are processed by Apple under the terms tied to your Apple Account. Idiolect does not receive your full payment-card details.

An auto-renewing subscription continues for the period shown at purchase unless you cancel it through your Apple Account settings. You can manage or cancel an Apple subscription from the App Store. Cancellation normally stops the next renewal rather than ending the current paid period immediately. Apple handles billing disputes and refund requests under its policies. Restoring a valid purchase may require the Apple Account used to make it.

We may change future prices or plan features. Apple will present any notice or consent required for a subscription price change. Mandatory consumer rights in your country are not limited by this section.

Acceptable use

You must not:

  • Use the Service unlawfully or to harm, threaten, or deceive.
  • Upload malware, probe security, disrupt infrastructure, or bypass technical limits or access controls.
  • Scrape private areas, use automated access where it is not expressly allowed, or place unreasonable load on the Service.
  • Reverse engineer the Service except where the law gives you a right that cannot be waived.
  • Use Idiolect's output to make high-impact decisions about another person or represent AI feedback as a professional assessment.
  • Infringe intellectual-property, privacy, confidentiality, or other rights belonging to someone else.

Intellectual property

The Service, including its software, visual design, brand, original copy, curated word material, and product features, belongs to Idiolect or its licensors and is protected by intellectual-property law. These Terms give you a personal, limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for its intended purpose. They do not transfer ownership of the Service to you.

Feedback and feature ideas are welcome. If you send them, you allow us to use them without payment or an obligation to implement them. This does not transfer ownership of Your Content.

Apple and other providers

Parts of the Service rely on third parties for authentication, hosting, AI processing, notifications, pronunciation audio, and purchase management. Their availability and terms can affect the Service. Our Privacy Policy names the providers that process relevant data and explains their roles.

If you download Idiolect through the Apple App Store, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies unless the App Store presents a different custom licence. Apple is not responsible for operating or supporting Idiolect, except for obligations it has under that agreement or applicable law.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep Idiolect available and reliable, but the Service may be interrupted for maintenance, provider failures, security work, or events outside our control. We do not promise uninterrupted access or that every error can be corrected.

We may discontinue the Service. Where reasonably possible, we will give advance notice if a discontinuation materially affects paid access or the ability to retrieve account data.

Suspension and termination

You may stop using Idiolect at any time. Deleting the app does not cancel an Apple subscription or delete your account. Manage billing through Apple and use the deletion controls provided in the app or contact us about account data.

We may restrict or suspend access when reasonably necessary to protect the Service or another person, comply with law, address non-payment, or respond to a serious or repeated breach of these Terms. Where appropriate, we will explain the reason and give you a chance to fix the issue.

Warranties and liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement where those warranties may lawfully be disclaimed.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Idiolect will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential loss, or for lost data, profit, opportunity, or goodwill arising from the Service. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability for a claim will not exceed the amount you paid for Idiolect in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.

Nothing in these Terms excludes a guarantee, remedy, or liability that applicable consumer law does not allow us to exclude or limit.

Changes and contact

We may update these Terms as the Service or law changes. We will update the date above and provide a more prominent notice if a material change needs your attention. Your continued use after the effective date means the revised Terms apply, unless applicable law requires another form of consent.

If one part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the remaining parts continue to apply. A delay in enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. Questions can be sent through our contact page or to me@andylower.com.
