Idiolect and WordUp

Idiolect vs WordUp: two different ways to learn words

These apps share more than the usual comparison page would admit. Both personalise vocabulary and care about using words in context. The real difference is how much they ask you to do and where the practice happens.

Breadth or restraint

WordUp describes a large English knowledge map, 25,000 common words, nine challenge types, spaced repetition, writing feedback, AI chat, and social features. It is the fuller learning system.

Idiolect is narrower by design. It offers one word, asks you to use it in a real part of your day, and checks the sentence you report back. It does not use points, hearts, or competitive progress.

Which one fits

Choose WordUp if you want a large catalogue, varied exercises, English-language support, and a conventional study session. Choose Idiolect if you already use English comfortably and want a small practice that changes which words you can reach for.

Idiolect membership is $9.99 per month or $34.99 per year, each starting with a 7-day free trial. WordUp is available now with free access and in-app purchases.

How this comparison was made

We checked the linked public product and App Store pages on 2026-08-19. The table compares those documented details with Idiolect's current product design. We do not claim hands-on testing unless a page says it happened. Idiolect is still in development, so its availability and pricing are not treated as settled facts.
